On today’s podcast episode, Brandi interviews Billie Ferguson, a mental health promoter, a holistic coach and consultant in my home state of Oklahoma. She is your overall wellness cheerleader.
Billie tells us about survival mode discussing topics such as:
-With survival mode, our prefrontal cortex is not online
-We don’t realize that we are even stuck there. So we just freeze or run.
I asked Billie, how can we pull people out of survival mode and specifically the pattern of people pleasing?
She gives valuable tips such as:
-Take a deep breath and move your body.
-Breath work is essential, it helps connect us to our nervous system. This helps us regulate and gets our nervous system online so we can get the thought processes back up and running.
-When you are getting started, start small, just one 1 breath for 3 minutes even 5 minutes.
-Stop trying to plug your life into someone else’s framework. Make it work for you.
Billie, When someone finds themselves in fight or flight, and there is resistance about being alone…. What would you recommend they do?
-Ask yourself about that part of you that doesn’t want to be alone. That part of you that wants to be with people, what does that part of yourself tell you.
-Don’t reject yourself.
-Trust yourself, take a breath, don’t overthink it.
- Ask yourself this POWERFUL QUESTION: What needs haven’t been met?
-Have you been looking inwards?
-Have you been experiencing joy and pleasure?
-Have you taken time for yourself?
How can Brain spotting help?
-It’s a technique based on where your eye positions are. It is connected to neuro-pathways in your brain that are connected to old thought patterns, belief systems etc, that are down deep in our brain stem. It allows us to bypass the “thinking brain” and get down deeper based off where your eyes are positioned.
Instead of avoiding we address it, we process it and we let it flow.
Are you choosing to be comfortable? It is time to step outside of your comfort zone, because that is what you know. Sometimes, chaos is what you know, you stay there because it is comfortable.
What does it feel like to come into ease and into your parasympathetic system?
-It’s like putting on new shoes that you have to break in. It is not always rainbow’s and butterflies. Some people feel different and its a struggle.
A sign that you are growing is by being uncomfortable or scared and having the courage to move forward.
Billie, how can those listening work with you?
-I practice therapy and I can work with insurance.
-I Practice coaching and consulting. With this modality, I get to bring in energy work !
-I am also passionate about working with business owners coming out of working for someone else.
Let’s talk about what it feels like to be fulfilled? What is it for you?
-It is very individualized -what are you passionate about , what gives you peace what sets your soul on fire?
-What does it feel like to get curious to try new things, and what do those things make you feel like?
-If we focus on the feeling first, then we can find our own formula.
-Being ok with it shifting with different seasons and transitions in life.
-As humans we want to know the how but you have to be ok with the unknown and that is what motherhood or any new transition period of life brings.
-Remember to trust yourself.
-There is no one that is going to skip the seasons of life !
Implementation Work:
-Write a list to yourself of everything you have already made in through in life, from birth to now and at the bottom of that write to yourself, 'If I can make it through this, I can make it though anything.'
-When you are looking at that list, what versions of you were formulated from those situations. “ This happened to me, well I learned XYZ.” “There is still a part of me that still believes this…..”
For example: There is a part of me that knows how important it is to take care of myself because if I don’t I can’t do XYZ. So what part of me am I going to lean into TODAY?
